Mike Bode's exhibition for DEPO brings together two disparate subjects into one exhibition project, the composer İlhan Usmanbaş and the former Formula 1 race track in Tuzla, Akfırat.
İlhan Usmanbaş, experimental composer who turned 96, is one of the second generation of Turkish modern composers. Usmanbaş was interested in universalist ideas and his compositions are noted for their freedom of form. To date Usmanbaş has composed over 120 works. However despite his prolific and intrepid work Usmanbaş remains surprisingly unknown in Turkey. The İstanbul Park Formula 1 race track in Akfırat was inaugurated on 21 August 2005 and has been called one of the best race tracks in the world by Formula 1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone. The race track was closed six years after its opening. The two parts are blended together in the exhibition space and presented in an open-ended essayistic form, each unfolding their own inherent narrative, context, histories and challenges.
The research for the project was undertaken through a scholarship at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul and during subsequent visits to Turkey.
