Cemal Erez – 24 Hours of a Bureaucrat

In his paintings of “24 Hours of a Bureaucrat” Cemal Erez deals with the mob of appointees which is structured by the ruling powers in order to block the initiatives of the people through paradoxes and absurdities. Erez creates the universe of this group in a fragmented series of twentyfour pictures, with figures which are disintegrated and then reassambled to form grotesque bodies.
The artist has conceived the series as preliminary sketches during his travels between Paris and Istanbul from 2002 to 2010, and then produced the paintings in the following three years at his studio in Istanbul.

Cemal Erez graduated from Graphic Arts Department of Istanbul Fine Arts Academy in 1973. He studied animation at Des Arts Decoratifs in Paris between 1980-83. He directed numerous films by the support of the Cinema Center of French Ministry of Culture between 1980-90 and by the support of Turkish Ministry of Culture between 1990-97. He worked at major animation studios in Paris. Erez produced animation films in 2000-2010 receiving subsidies from the French TV 2. He is currently teaching at Bahçeşehir University, VCD Department.

The exhibition is organized as part of the events celebrating the 30th anniversary of Galeri Selvin and by the collaboration of the gallery and Depo.
