Sharing Waters: Sauna Meets Hamam

In a world where people have left their cultural roots behind there is a great need for new meeting places. Public places that convey security where it is possible to meet without bias, a place where we can challenge our preconceptions.

Why public baths – what do bathing and a specific bathing culture represent? Sharing Waters is an art exhibition and a platform for discussion seeking to focus on the function of the bathhouse as an important public meeting place. Four female artists from four different countries exhibit their work at DEPO in Istanbul from 15th October to 14th November. Sharing Waters presents contributions by Gülsün Karamustafa (Istanbul), Buthayna Ali (Damascus), Heta Kuchka (Helsinki) and Maria Ängquist Klyvare(Stockholm). Each artist has created an artwork out of their own personal reflections on bathing and traditions.

What is at risk of being lost if the public bath disappears? On October 16th, 1 pm, the public is invited to a conference at DEPO chaired by participants from the four different bathing cultures: Derya Özkan (Turkey), Sarab Atassi (Syria), Sari Näre (Finland) and Jane Magnusson(Sweden). Drawing on their specialised qualifications and areas of interest, the speakers’ different angles of approach will encourage and contribute to the debate between conference participants.
After its exhibition in Istanbul, the organisers behind Sharing Waters aim for the project to go on tour to Damascus, Helsinki and Stockholm, where the project once started.
