28 May – 27 June 2010
This multi-media exhibition aims to examine the heterogeneous and ever-changing set of norms and knowledge of behaviours in social and cultural identity within the ever-changing texture of Turkey. By questioning whether a dominant culture is dependant upon counter-cultural movements to establish itself as dominant, it departs from the conceptualisations of the shifting modes of cultural representations and their disjunctures to facilitate a constructive dialogue among the multi-ethnic textured population in Turkey, where peoples’ lives are subject to an ongoing reconstruction. The exhibition highlights the significance of Istanbul as a pivotal point between memory and imagination acting as a hinge between here and now. With a sensitivity that makes visual arts all the more powerful as an instrument of memory and mission, it aims to transmit the ‘untransmissible’ and highlights the role art plays in making radical changes beyond collective and individual subjectivity.
About the artist
Helin Anahit was born and brought up in Istanbul and lives and works in London. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Fine Art at Middlesex University. She is a cross-disciplinary artist, working predominantly with video exploring space through a lens. Drawing on ideas on social and transcultural identity, her work has been described as ‘eloquently formed, philosophically and critically nuanced’, both documentary and poetic in style ‘full of meaning, which is slippery and allusive.’ Helin has participated in exhibitions and screenings; led related seminars and workshops and also has presented papers in conferences both nationally and internationally.
