İlhan Sayın – Looking

The first solo exhibition of artist İlhan Sayın, whose works were previously seen in various group shows and as illustrations on many book covers, will be hosted by Depo. Sayın is a graduate of Mimar Sinan University Sculpture Department and he is mostly known for his drawings and collage works. The solo exhibition titled “Looking” will include series of drawings he produced in the last two years.

Drawing is an important form of expression for its capacity of enabling particular visions to be conveyed from an almost unmediated perspective and thus letting the viewer witness artist’s moods, sensibilities or limits of sensibilities. On the side of the artist its significance largely relies on a certain sense of rapid reflection and creation.

The drawings exhibited in “Looking” depict landscapes which include natural forms / details from pastoral scenery, together with artificial and/or dumped objects. More familiar views of landscape all of a sudden intertwine with images of dumped car tires, crates, mattresses or plastic water tanks.

Is it necessary to ascribe our own states of mind to the landscape?

Is it possible to empathize with the spoiled landscape, hence nature?

Or is it always, more or less the same thing happening when we look at the landscape and its representation?
