10 March – 21 April 2012

Kemal’s Dream is a photo series of 56 works by Ahmet Polat which focuses on young people in present-day Turkey. For the past six years, Polat lived and worked in Turkey. He travelled from Istanbul to the Black Sea and from Gaziantep in the south-east to the Aegean region to visit, photograph and interview friends and new acquaintances. This results in a personal document as well as a geographic survey that brings instances from lives of a generation closer.

The diversity reflected in these pictures also gives hints of certain social, political and economical layers which are interwoven and make ‘youth’ almost impossible to define as a clear category and with a unified image. Yet the mythical meanings once associated with the term by nationalistic and modernist ideals, as well as the clichéd judgmental attitude of older generations seem to hover around these images and put them into an invisible field of tension.

Just as in his earlier work, Polat seeks the interplay between expectations, prejudices and affirmation. As a documentary photographer, Polat makes use of traditional visual language, but is able to transcend this through his dynamic and layered compositions. Due to his upbringing of a Dutch mother and Turkish father, he has integrated both perspectives of the outsider and insider within his work and such a fusion is seen in his approach to his subject.

Ahmet Polat is a recipient of ICP’s (International Center of Photography) “Young Photographer” award. His work has been presented in art institutions like the Istanbul Modern, FOAM, The Rijks Museum in Amsterdam and he exhibited in countries like France, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Malaysia, and Belgium. He has received several international scholarships from Foundation BKVB and The Mondriaan Foundation. He’s been nominated for Prix Pictet and Anna Cornelis prizes. Besides his commissioned work for NY times, Paris Match, De Volkskrant, Vrij Nederland, his work has been published in French Vogue, Beeldcultuur, Quest and Vice magazine. He is now currently working in Istanbul.

Ahmet Polat – Kemal’s Dream is curated by Foam Amsterdam.

With the support of Mondriaan Foundation and the Netherlands Consulate General of Istanbul.
