Maja Weyermann – Letters From Abroad
13/06/2015 @ 11:00 - 16/07/2015 @ 17:00
13 June – 16 July 2015
Maja Weyermann’s video installation makes reference to the role Armenians played in carpet production and trade in Turkey before 1915, and interconnects this history with the expropriation of the immovable assets of Armenian foundations in Istanbul. The artist invites the viewers to confront the expropriation of material heritage and the obliteration of cultural heritage and depicts, in a very personal way, these two aspects of the Armenian genocide.
During a residency in 2014, the artist planned to make a film about Anatolian carpets as a part of cultural memory and their connotations in this context. Soon after she started her research, she came across with the key role of Armenian craftsmen and women and dealers in the carpet trade in Turkey before 1915. Another observation Weyermann made during her residency was the link between the vacant real estate and restitution procedures in Istanbul. Around the same time, she came across the 2012 Declaration of the Hrant Dink Foundation, which documented the confiscation of properties belonging to Armenian foundations by the Turkish state.
In her work, Weyermann combines real HD video footage with 3-D animations. 3-D animation is used to create an experience of space that would otherwise be impossible to render (memories, imagination, etc….), while the video recordings ground the work in a sense of “the real”. The audio track includes a narration, sounds and music, and it works as an independent soundscape. Additionally, the installation includes an interview with an Armenian carpet maker, born in 1936.
The exhibition is generously supported by The Berlin Senate Chancellery – Cultural Affairs Department.
2015 Exhibition Program of DEPO is being realized in cooperation with Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
