Sıla Yolu: The Holiday Transit to Turkey and the Tales of the Highway
04/03/2017 @ 11:00 - 02/04/2017 @ 17:00

4 March – 2 April 2017
The exhibition “SILA YOLU – The Holiday Transit to Turkey and the Tales of the Highway” focuses on the highway route between Germany and Turkey which has been used primarily by Turkish immigrants since the 1960s. Known as Sıla Yolu, Autoput or Deathroad, the former European route E-5 tells many stories of leaving home, holiday returns, hope and homesickness. The same route, known today as the Western Balkan route, is crossed by refugees headed in the opposite direction toward Western Europe. The exhibition is not only looking at the physical space between the two places, but also at the emotional space in which concepts of culture, identity and community rapidly interchange.
Between summer 2013-2016, Malve Lippmann and Can Sungu, both Berlin-based artists and founders of the project space bi’bak, conducted artistic research on-site and in the archives. The outcome is a mobile audio-visual installation and exhibition set up in an old Ford Transit, the typical and now symbolic car used by many Turkish immigrant families for the journey between their old and new homes. After touring in Berlin, the SILA YOLU exhibition is now traveling to Istanbul to be presented in DEPO during March 2017.
