Two Faces of Suffering brings together countless stories that a young photographer has collected through 7 months of travelling to around 70 cities and more than 100 towns in Turkey. These stories belong to those who have lost their children during the 30 year long fighting that opposed the Turkish state with the PKK. The pictures and video footage Kamuran Erkaçmaz has shot bring us face to face with the true victims of this conflict: impoverished people of the country. Theirs is the condition described by the poet’s words: “Hunger has no language / Poverty has no land”. But poverty is not the only thing that binds them: they also share a deep longing for peace. There is no hint of hatred in those eyes looking straight at the camera, in spite of the unbearable pain that grieves their hearts.
This exhibition will showcase photographs, sound and video footage as well as personal belongings pertaining to only a few of the hundreds of stories that photographer came across during his journey.
Two Faces of Suffering upholds both Turkey’s shared tears and its conscience. In spite of all the attempts that were made over the years to silence them, it brings forth a people’s silenced outcries and its longing for peace.
