19/03/2016 @ 11:00 - 15/04/2016 @ 17:00
19 March – 15 April 2016
The exhibition “Unidentifiable Fire: Newroz – Media, Discourse, Ritual” focuses on ways in which Newroz has been represented in mainstream newspapers. In this context, it opens up a discussion regarding the contradictory or imposing position of media which is instrumentalized with the claims of representation and conveying news.
The exhibition organized by Istanbul Kurdish Institute and Bilgi University Kurdology Research Unit, explores the modes of visualization and the journalistic language used in references to certain mythic origins, ways of celebrating, appropriating and occasionally banning of Newroz. The exhibited material is based on mainstream newspaper issues dated between 14th and 28th of March covering the last 25 years. The research which is a result of reviewing over 30 thousand items, not only aims to understand how the tradition is invented, what kind of a political struggle is carried on within this context but also to comprehend the dynamics of social memory through Newroz.
