The Village Project Istanbul

17/11/2018 - 13/01/2019

17 November 2018 – 13 January 2019

The social systems we are currently part of fail to be sufficient to deal with the newly emerged complex socio-political and economic conditions which are increasingly causing anxiety both for individuals and groups. The research that has been done on alternative social systems has led us to question the possibilities of more fundamental states of living, which enable better possibilities for real changes; creativity and education. The individual autonomy today is greater than any other period in history. How do we oppose the factors that restrain this autonomy, and enjoy a life of self-governance and self-sufficiency?

The Village Project is an art project, deeply rooted on these ultimate questions. As individuals living with others in the society, how can we generate abilities to think and make decisions in our way, to see the broader structure rather than a fragment, and to respect ourselves and others? Furthermore, based on these abilities, how can we create a better life and society for us and future generations? This project proposes alternative art education as a platform in which, we can try thinking about possible answers to these questions.

The Village Project functions as a mediator and presents a form of physical and psychological experience that sheds light on certain aspects of creative learning and alternative education by generating alternative thoughts, and transforming individual practices into real engagement. The Village Project initiated by artist Yang Ah Ham was first organized in 2015 as a part of the SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul. It occupied Nam-Seoul Living Arts Museum, one of the biennale venues, and transformed the space into an environment for mutual learning and everyday activities. The museum became a temporary village-community of visual art educators and artists for the duration of three weeks before the opening of the biennale exhibition. After this summer camp, the space was transformed into an archival exhibition presenting the video documentation, interviews, and publications on the performative activities and programs. This year, the second version of the project was carried out by a collective group in Seoul with the support of the city municipality in the form of workshops and exhibitions that continue throughout the year.

The Village Project Istanbul is organized from April to December 2018 by Yang Ah Ham and Arzu Yayıntaş in collaboration with Depo. Under the scope of the project, the artists and lecturers invited from different countries and Turkey organize a series of workshops and lectures. The archival documentation from the programs hosted in Istanbul and the other two editions of the project in Seoul in 2016 and 2018 will be shared with the audience at the first floor of Depo between 17 November and 30 December 2018.
