Selim Birsel
At Full Cock
March 2 – March 31, 2013
Depo is hosting one of the most comprehensive exhibitions of Selim Birsel‘s work since 2009. The exhibition includes two new videos, “Gömülmüş” (Embedded) and “Halfeti’nin Siyah Gül Bahçesi” (Halfeti’s Black Rose Garden), an installation titled “Paravanlar” (Paravanes), photographs and new renditions of two earlier works, “Atılan Toplar” (Thrown Balls) and “Rezistans II” (Resistance II). In addition to these works, “Cabinet du Flanerie Rhizome”, the study room which documents Birsel’s processes of collecting and producing is installed at Depo and the artist book News Impressions will be launched during the exhibition.
The artist’s faith in the creative impulse of the moments of encounter and coincidence, the way he deals with social and political conditions by transforming personal experiences and a diverse range of objects from daily life, and the continuity of the works as processes on their own with an openness to re-interpretation make up the distinctive elements of Birsel’s practice. The content of At Full Cock originates from the experiences and impressions Birsel has collected during his visits to geographies which are “close but perceived as distanced,” namely Lebanon, Diyarbakır and Mardin, in which the artist has developed a strong research interest since 2008.
Birsel is currently participating at Arter’s “Envy, Enmity, Embarassment” (24 Jan – 7 Apr) and has a solo exhibition titled “Night” at m1886 Art Projects, Ankara (2 Feb – 10 Mar). Between 7 March and 20 April, Birsel will have another solo show titled “Step By Step” at Egeran Gallery which represents the artist. Birsel is a faculty member at Sabancı University, FASS since 1999.
