Archive and Ambiguity: A Workshop on Family Narratives

April 7, 2026, 20:30

Tuesday, April 7, 18:30-20:30

Facilitator: Nora Tataryan

As part of Okyanus Çağrı Çamcı’s Sub Rosa, on view at Depo until 11 April, a workshop will be held by Nora Tataryan.

Family archives are closely tied to the narratives constructed around them, how these narratives are circulated, and the power relations distributed among individuals. Framed within the field of memory studies, this workshop focuses on how ordinary correspondence, photographs and daily documents come to function as archival material. It also invites discussion about how the narratives built around these materials are shaped by need, and how they possess a fictional dimension. Participants will be invited to reconsider memory and power relations and reinterpret family narratives through the question of why we turn to family archives.

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore the possibilities of imagination and fiction when approaching family narratives. Together, they will discuss ways of positioning themselves within family archives, or of questioning that position, through literature and critical thinking. This will help them build a shared frame of reference. At the end of the workshop, participants will write a speculative story based on a family photograph they have brought along, applying the discussions to a small-scale writing exercise.

The event will be held in Turkish. Participation is limited to 20 people. Each participant is expected to bring one family photograph.
