27 February – 13 April 2014
Performance: 7 March Friday, 19:00
Depo presents the extensive solo exhibition of another female artist from the 90’s generation, Gülçin Aksoy’s “Double Story”.
Gülçin Aksoy, both in her individual practice using various media and in artist collectives she has been part of or collaborated with, as well as in her ongoing education career, tries to develop a language that aims to reveal commonplace ideological constructs and all sorts of power mechanisms ingrained in daily and institutional life.
The trauma caused by the 1980 coup on the artist’s family and the changes the city of Samsun – where Aksoy was born and raised – went through during and after the coup, stand in the focus point of the show which occupies two floors of Depo. The framework of the exhibition expands from this point to cover issues such as post-80’s urbanization and accelerating urban transformation and lack of self-criticism and confrontation in personal and social scale. Videos, photographs, carpets, paintings and installations selected by the artist from her recent production seem to investigate the military regime, the symbols of nation state and institutional hierarchies through Aksoy’s own experiences and relationships she formed with all of these structures.
The artist book designed and produced by Aksoy is silkscreen printed in 100 copies by Birtakımşeyler Studio for the exhibition.
A publication including texts by Ahu Antmen and by Derya Fırat and Öndercan Muti (from BEKS – Association for Studies on the Sociology of Memory and Culture), an interview by Serra Özhan-Yüksel with Gülçin Aksoy about the story of Double Story and Aksoy’s interview with Suat Baysal, member of Samsun 78’ers Foundation, will be accompanying the exhibition.
Performance “Beraber ve Solo Şarkılar (Group and Solo Songs)” co-produced by Gökçe Erhan and Gülçin Aksoy will be staged together with kanun player Utku Yiğit and men’s choir on Friday 7th March, at 19:00.
