Balca Ergener – My Anxious Heart

Balca Ergener’s exhibition titled My Anxious Heart opens at Depo on May 2nd.

My Anxious Heart focuses on the ongoing motion between transitoriness and rootedness in a world characterized by rapid cycles of destruction and construction, migration and changing ecologies. Ergener explores how to express sensual and affective states related to dwelling in urban environments shaped by these forces. Through spatial images and text fragments that resonate with memories of everyday life or dream images, she tries to connect her inner world shaped by the social with those of the viewers.

The exhibition is named after the artist’s most recent collage series. Spread out throughout the space in fragments and therefore allowing for various overlaps based on spatial circulation, the series relates to Ergener’s other works produced through various collaborative processes. While The Rhythm of Transience, the Rhythm of Happiness (2014) includes excerpts from the artist’s book she produced together with Meltem Ahıska, Wild Olive Game (2019) is a documentation of a writing game in which twenty women participated and produced a collective text. Forgetting Oneself (2020-2023) is another work by Ergener that incorporates games that are frequent in her production. It includes examples of writing exercises that can be played alone and word cards that the artist hopes will inspire viewers.

Amidst ruins and the standardization of language, My Anxious Heart presents an exploration of public spaces and the narratives they hold through provocative encounters.
