“Broken Memories” Book launch and finissage
13/07/2023 @ 18:30 - 21:00
Thursday, July 13, 18:30
In a book-launch and finissage, Andréas Lang’s catalogue-book Broken Memories will be presented to readers at Depo. The book, as the exhibition with the same name, which is open to visitors until 14 July Friday, is the result of several years of artistic research on the themes of recollection and history in Turkey.
The research started in 2018 with Lang’s stipend and residency at Tarabya Cultural Academy in Istanbul. In his photographs and videos Andréas Lang reflects on the disappearance, discontinuity and multiple layers of historical inscription that leaves visible traces of a collective memory long since rendered invisible. He focuses on history with a contemporary approach, especially on places with links to the late Ottoman Empire, the Armenian heritage and the 1915 Genocide. Lang describes his work as visual archaeology, which reveals the different layers of history, mythology and the present. The images often appear like stages or film sets, in a limbo between past, present and future.
Andréas Lang, curators Refik Akyüz and Serdar Darendeliler, Aylin Vartanyan Dilaver, Asena Günal and Tamar Nalcı will be present during the event and share their experience regarding the exhibition and the book.
Broken Memories is published by Kerber Verlag, Berlin with the support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and includes texts in English, Armenian and Turkish. The event will be held in English and Turkish.
