Djinns is the second novel by Fatma Aydemir, widely regarded as one of Germany’s most influential contemporary writers. It tells the story of a migrant family who reunite in Turkey following the death of their father. Alongside the struggles of migration, the novel offers an intimate and deeply graceful exploration of personal issues such as grief, regret, and faith. “There are certain thoughts that only come to mind in the dark,” says Djinns. After watching the recording of the theater play, directed by Nurkan Erpulat, the discussion will focus not only the themes of the play and the novel but also the thoughts that come to mind in the dark.

Born in Ankara, Nurkan Erpulat studied acting in Izmir and directing at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. His productions and projects – some in the field of youth theater – have been invited to festivals and guest performances around the world, and have received numerous awards. These include an invitation to the Theatertreffen der Jugend youth theater festival for his play Clash, produced at Berlin’s Deutsches Theater. Together with Jens Hillje he developed the play Verrücktes Blut (Mad Blood), which he then directed at Berlin’s Ballhaus Naunynstrasse in 2011. The piece was then invited to the Theatertreffen and Mülheimer Theatertagen festivals and was honoured by the journal Theater heute as play of the year for 2011. That same year Erpulat was also awarded the title of young director of the year by Theater heute. Nurkan Erpulat is a resident director at Maxim Gorki Theater since 2013.

Born in Istanbul, Selin Tunç studied piano at the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory and decided to pursue writing during her university years. After earning a bachelor’s degree in literature in New York, she completed her master’s degree at Boğaziçi University, specializing in Tanzimat literature. Tunç has been working as a screenwriter since 1999. She began her writing career as part of the writing team for İkinci Bahar and continued by writing for TV series such as Yabancı Damat, Canım Ailem, Aramızda Kalsın, and Güzel Günler, as well as the film Sürgün. She has published short stories in literary journals and has also written a children’s novel.

Registration is not required. The talk will be held in Turkish.
