Conversation with Cana Bilir-Meier

In her presentation, Cana Bilir-Meier, whose three video works featured in the exhibition explore the lives of people from different generations living in Germany with family histories of migration, will introduce her artistic practices from various periods. Afterwards, Zühal Bilir-Meier, the artist’s mother, who contributes to the exhibition with her work Grammatikheft will read a letter addressed to her sister, the poet Semra Ertan. Finally, vocal artist Nihan Devecioğlu will perform a song she has composed based on Semra Ertan’s poem I Want to Live as I Please.
Cana Bilir-Meier is a filmmaker and artist based in Munich. Her work engages with memory, migration, and cultural education through film, drawing, sound, and performance. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at Sabancı University in Istanbul. In 2018, she co-initiated the memorial project for Semra Ertan and in 2020 co-edited the poetry collection Semra Ertan: Mein Name ist Ausländer / Benim Adım Yabancı. In 2021, she was a visiting professor for art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
