Turn and See Back: Revisiting Trans Revolutions in Turkey, exhibition prepared by the 10th Trans Pride Week Exhibition Collective, will be open to visitors at Depo until July 27.
Spinning, revolving, the colorful slides of transformation. Dönmes invite you into the perpetual cycle of reinventing oneself. To step over the threshold and touch the resilient fabric of the trans movement in Turkey.
Archival fragments swirl around – faded photographs, crackling footage, whispers from yellowed news clippings. Coalescing and dispersing, each revolution unveils another facet of the multidimensional dönme/era. The personal intertwines with the collective. Like the self-devouring serpent, symbol of infinity and renewal, transformations follow one another.
Lubunca rituals reverberate, imbuing spaces with the secret slang of their culture. Echoes shape-shift; at times sharp as blades, at others caressing tenderly.
Dönme always insists: Turn. See. Become.
To be swept away by the currents, propelled through the years spiraling outward from that first seed of social rupture in the 80s. The dönme’s centrifugal force creates new identities, new modes of being that continuously turn back on themselves.
In this maelstrom of resistance, Turn and See Back is an invitation to keep turning, to never cease seeing the protean, radical self-rising like the transformative Simurg from the ashes of the past. Without forgetting, without shame…
As part of the exhibition, a talk will be held with the Exhibition Collective and contributors on Thursday, July 4 at 18:30.
